Through to the next round of the Essex Junior Trophy

Competition: Essex Junior Trophy (Second Round)

SSBFC (A) v East Ham International FC (H)

SSB started their first game of the tournament with a win over East Ham Inter. Despite having a thin squad and a few players not 100% match fit, the team made a strong start to the game building up play from the back and exposing the gaps in East Ham’s back line. The high pressure from the away team paid off as Rajan Sangha pressed a defender resulting in the loss of possession. Our prolific CF Dilan Gordon got onto the loose ball and drove towards goal ending his run with a cool finish as the ball nestled into the back of the net.

Dilan Gordan added another to his goals tally making it 13 for the season so far as he converted Villia Caleir’s corner with a brilliant headed effort. East Ham then applied the pressure but were kept away from creating any serious goal scoring opportunities by a good defensive display from the entire squad.

In the second half, East Ham were a bigger threat through the middle but again failed to break through SSB’s defensive line until they managed to  make a successful run down the right wing. A tackle in the box meant the ball fell to a free player and SSB conceded to make the score 2-1. SSB raised their game a notch and once again took control, keeping better possession of the ball and exploiting the spaces in behind the opposition’s full backs with good diagonal passes and switches of play.

An injury meant that David Maclean was moved into centre midfield to screen the back four for the last ten minutes. Moments after the change his ambitious effort was denied by a last ditch header off the goal line. The resulting corner was headed out, which fell to David Maclean once again. This time he directed his effort to the bottom left corner which was helped along the way by fellow team mate Dilan. It still remains to be decided who will claim the goal.

It was a good overall performance that displayed a level of maturity in the teams shape, organisation and game management.
